Surrounded by the familiar comforts of a real home, our residents enjoy a calm, cozy environment that feels natural—because it is. With just 10 residents, everything we do is thoughtfully tailored to support their well-being, dignity, and daily joy.
We’re not a large, institutional facility—and we don’t want to be. With just ten residents, we’re able to provide the kind of personalized, relationship-based care that simply isn’t possible in bigger settings. In fact, many of our residents come to us from larger providers where the size, noise, and staff turnover made it hard to adjust. Here, they quickly find calm, consistency, and a true sense of home.
Our caregivers are the heart of our home. We hire our CNAs for warmth and compassion just as much as experience, and we’re highly selective to ensure a strong and lasting fit with our residents. This helps reduce staff turnover and fosters meaningful, lasting connections.
We go a step further by requiring caregivers to memorize each resident’s preferences—from how they take their coffee to their favorite music. It’s a personalized approach only possible in an intimate setting like ours.
All caregivers receive advanced dementia care training based on techniques from Teepa Snow, a leading expert in positive, relationship-focused care. This training goes beyond state required standards and equips our team to support each resident with respect, gentleness, and understanding—especially during difficult moments.
MEMORY CARE WITH A HEART
Our home is warm, clean, and genuinely lived in. Common spaces are relaxing and inviting—and they actually get used. Whether it’s sharing meals, participating in a favorite activity, or simply enjoying quiet time, every space is designed to feel familiar and comforting.
Residents enjoy real time outdoors in spaces designed for use, not just appearance. Gardening, sunshine, fresh air, and nature are all part of our daily rhythm. These small joys play a big role in emotional well-being. (See our Life & Activities page for more details).
Our small-scale, consistent, and familiar environment helps reduce confusion and aggressive behaviors—especially during transitions. While no memory care setting can be exactly like the home a resident came from, we strive to be the closest thing to it. That difference shows up not just in our approach, but in our outcomes.
"Denise and her team are incredibly attentive, remembering not just resident preferences but even family names and details. Their genuine care and attention to every little thing give me complete confidence in the quality of care they provide."
- Betty M.
"We moved my father from a larger facility because we felt he wasn’t getting the attention he needed. The care at Birch Haven is completely different—attentive, personal, and genuinely compassionate. Seeing how well he is cared for here has given us so much peace of mind."
- Stewart W.
It depends on your loved one’s needs. Assisted living is a great option for individuals who need help with daily tasks—like bathing, dressing, or managing medications—but are still socially and mentally independent. Some individuals with early-stage dementia may do well in assisted living, especially if they’re still oriented and able to participate safely in daily routines.
Memory care is better suited for those with more advanced cognitive decline—especially if they’re experiencing confusion, wandering, agitation, or difficulty managing day-to-day life safely and independently.
We offer a free care assessment to help determine the right level of support. This includes evaluating memory, behavior patterns, mobility, and daily care needs. However, we can often help you evaluate basic fit right over the phone. If unsure, feel free to call us at (253) 766-5908—we're happy to talk you through it.
Yes. Our home is designed to be both safe and non-institutional. We have discreet security features to prevent wandering and promote safety, without feeling restrictive.
We offer daily activities tailored to each resident’s abilities and interests—common activities include music, light gardening, art, reminiscence, and simple routines that promote physical movement and a stimulate the senses.
Our caregivers receive specialized dementia care training, including techniques from Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care, which goes far beyond the state’s basic requirements. For us, training is not a simple checklist, but something we focus on daily and weekly as we see opportunities to improve the lives and care of our residents.
We hire all team members based on their personality, attention to detail, and communication quality. This approach has helped us build a team of compassionate CNAs and support staff who are great at noticing needs and following instructions.
How well do you know your residents?
We believe truly great care goes far beyond meeting basic needs—it starts with genuinely knowing the person. Every resident who joins our home brings with them a rich life story, personal preferences, and unique routines, and we work hard to honor that.
Our caregivers are required to memorize detailed preferences for each resident, including things like favorite snacks, how they take their coffee, preferred music or movies, and what helps them feel most at ease. We even hold pop quizzes during staff meetings to make sure everyone stays sharp and attentive.
Each caregiver also has access to a written profile for every resident, so care stays consistent—even when staff shifts change. This level of personalization helps residents feel recognized, valued, and more at home from day one.
Social connection is important at every age—and especially for those living with memory loss. In our home, we encourage all staff members to spend intentional time each day connecting with residents. For those who can carry on a conversation, that might mean a few minutes of friendly chatting. For others, it may be as simple as a warm smile, a calming tone, or sharing a quiet moment together. We remind our caregivers that patience, kindness, and even a little humor can go a long way.
Mealtimes are one of the best opportunities for natural interaction. While many memory care residents may not initiate conversation, the relaxed atmosphere around the table often leads to shared smiles, moments of recognition, and occasional laughter.
As a small residential home, we have just two dining tables for our 10 residents. Every resident joins the group at mealtime—unless they’re physically unable—which creates a familiar, communal rhythm to the day and encourages gentle social engagement without overwhelm.
